women seminar

One World 2005 will host a seminar called "Innovative Approaches in the Promotion of Women's Rights,"organized by the Slovak-Czech Women's Fund. This seminar will take place from April 28th to May 2nd in Mat. The aim of the seminar is to bring together women activists, representatives of advocacy groups and grass-roots organizations from EU countries and the wider Europe region (East and Southeast Europe) and female filmmakers focusing on women rights.

The core of the workshop program will be topic-oriented video screenings and follow-up discussions moderated by experienced professionals. Moderators will facilitate conclusion-directed debates that will have universal value and practical strategies that could be applied in various circumstances. Debates will be summed up and published on the Internet. Topics include: domestic violence, gender specific violence, women as refugees, trafficking, LGBT community related issues, women fighting for truth and justice, film-maker ethics with regard to personal stories and victimization.

Women's rights activists will learn to promote women's rights issues and influence public opinion by using documentaries as strong advocacy tools. Filmmakers will receive the feedback on the methods of filmmaking they use, and will learn about the impact of grass root activism dealing with women's rights issues. The workshop will be an opportunity to discuss ethical aspects of filmmaking and the usage of gender sensitive language both verbal and visual. By engaging activists and filmmakers, the seminar will create a model approach of socially responsible filmmaking and the use of audio-visual art in advocacy work. The seminar will also create a dynamic network that will unite advocacy groups from EU member states and those from wider Europe.
