More about human rights film festival

DerHumALC
Argentina

The DerHumALC International Film and Video Festival on Human Rights, now in its fifth edition, has been organized from the conviction that „each woman, man, girl and boy must be conscious of his human rights -civilians, cultural, economics, politics and socials- to realize his or her total human capabilities" (Resolution 49/184 of the ONU General Assembly). The main objective of the festival is to promote a forum for discussion and debate on human rights and human development in Latin America and the Caribbean through artistic representation, observed in independently made films and videos.

One World
Czech Republic

One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival aims to expose abuses, encourage dignity, inspire solidarity and foster mutual understanding between cultures. Organized by the People in Need Foundation under the auspices of former president Václav Havel, it presents high-quality documentaries that take a concerned and often critical look at the present-day world and its transformations. One World believes that the power of documentary film resides as much in the means of expression as in the content and message of a particular film. The festival strives to offer an inside look, yet is fully aware that there are no simple answers. One World is an international competition of documentary films and videos, retrospectives, workshops, debates, concerts and photo exhibitions.

Seoul Human Rights Film Festival
South Korea

The Sarangbang Group for Human Rights created the Seoul Human Rights Film Festival in 1996. The festival is aimed at increasing human rights awareness among the Korean public through film. It is held annually in May and screens excellent films from all over the world related to human rights, irrespective of genre, format and length. The selection is based on artistic completion and, most of all, sincerity in dealing with human rights issues. Among the achievements of the film festival, the most important may be the expansion of freedom of expression. South Korea still suffers censorship by the state. Since 1996, all festival films have been screened without being subject to preliminary censorship, despite such difficulties as the director of the festival being arrested in 1997.

International Film Festival on Human Rights
Switzerland

The International Film Festival on Human Rights takes place in Geneva at the same time as the working session of the UN Commission on Human Rights. In this way, Geneva becomes the international capital of human rights for eight days. The festival innovated the concept of one film, one subject, one debate. Its aim is to inform, debate and denounce any attack on human dignity by screening quality films and videos as the starting point for a larger debate on the universal issue of human rights. To many, it seems that the avalanche of television news images that purport to bring us the „real“ story of recent global conflicts and the fight for freedom has done more to obfuscate than illuminate. The Human Rights Watch International Film Festival, currently in its 14th year, offers an alternative — turning an unfiltered lens on some of the most topical issues of our day with a rich array of films and videos that explore human rights themes from a truly global perspective.
