Visegrad countries (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia) produce a number of high quality documentaries each year. However, they are rarely presented at film festivals abroad and even in the region itself there is not too much curiosity and awareness about what is going on in the documentary field beyond everyone's own borders. This lack of exposure makes the marketing of Visegrad documentary films very difficult, which in turn means less chance for the production of new films.

In order to raise the visibility of Visegrad documentaries, the Prague-based One World film festival has initiated the establishment of a database and video library of major documentaries produced in Visegrad countries after 1989. It is not our ambition to overlap in any way with the already existing national film promotion centers such as Czech Film Center, Slovak Film Institute, Hungarian Filmunió or Film Polski Promotion Agency or with any of the well established film festivals that specialize in the presentation of national film production. It is just the opposite. We try to cooperate with all of them based on the idea that apart from promoting national cinematographies on its own, it makes a lot of sense in today's increasingly globalized and increasingly competitive world to play regionally as well.

Visegrad countries and the documentary filmmaking in these countries have so much in common in terms of history, traditions, style, topics and present situations, that it comes as a big surprise that there has been so far no joint initiative to promote regional documentary filmmaking as a whole. Such initiatives exist elsewhere and the results are visible - the films from these regions, although handicapped by language and cultural differences in the very same manner as in Central Europe, have much better international exposure than filmmakers from Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

From the onset we have been very much inspired by the excellent work of Filmkontakt Nord. There is no reason to not follow the good example of others and the only thing we hope for is that one day we can come close to the excellency of Filmkontakt Nord. The One World team and a number of very committed individuals from all four countries have provided an example by preparing this database. We hope that our initial effort will persuade enough filmmakers and professional film institutions to join and cooperate with us on the constant updating and further development of the Visegrad Documentary Library.

Within the framework of Visegrad Documentary Library project we have printed a catalogue that is available by demand.

This catalogue provides basic information about a selection of documentary films and videos that have been produced in the Visegrad countries between 1989 and 2002. The listed films and videos are selected by an advisory committee with representatives from all the Visegrad countries. We did not want to make any sort of "the best of the best" lists, but we do hope that we have listed the relevant works of important regional filmmakers.

Apart from catalogue, there is much more to be found on www.visegrad-doc.cz. Information on approximately 400 films is currently catalogued by title, length, year of production, subject matter, director and producer. Many of the titles that are listed in the database are available for viewing on VHS-cassettes at the One World festival premises in Prague. We will do our best to update the database regularly and we hope it will serve as a useful information resource for festival programmers, critics, distributors, acquisition editors and other film professionals.

In addition to this, each year we make a special selection of 15 documentaries from the Visegrad Library in order to screen them at the One World festival and to tour the collection through the other film festivals in the region and abroad. In the year 2003, apart from Prague these Visegrad Highlights have been also presented at Mediawave Györ in Hungary, the Cracow Film Festival in Poland, the One World Bratislava in Slovakia, the Targu Mures Alter-Native Festival in Romania and at the Meetings in Siberia Film Festival in Novosibirsk, Russia.
