Supported by: International Visegrad Fund Visegrad countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia) produce a number of high quality documentaries each year. However, they are rarely presented at film festivals abroad. This lack of exposure makes the marketing of Visegrad films very difficult, which in turn means less chance for the production of new films. Although Visegrad countries have much in common in terms of history, traditions, and present situations, there is currently no joint initiative to promote regional documentary filmmaking. Such initiatives exist in other regions (e.g. Nordic countries) and the results are visible - the films from these regions, although handicapped by language and cultural differences in the very same manner as in Central Europe, have much better exposure abroad than filmmakers from Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. In order to raise the visibility of Visegrad documentaries, One World has launched a new project to create a database and video library of major documentaries produced in Visegrad countries after 1989. Information on approximately 200 films will be processed by title, genre, topic, format, year of production, director, and producer and will be made available on the internet at www.oneworld.cz. The films will be available for viewing on VHS-cassettes at the One World festival premises in Prague. We also hope the Visegrad Library will serve as the promotion center for the Visegrad documentary film community. The library and database will include both short and feature-length documentary films made by film directors from Visegrad countries and/or produced (or co-produced) by Visegrad countries. The selected films and videos will focus on the changes Visegrad countries have undergone since 1989, both the necessary reflections on recent history and focus on the continuing transition to democracy. The selection will therefore present the complex history and culture of the Visegrad countries (and neighboring regions) as well as issues long suppressed by the ruling Communist regimes and the problems that emerged after their fall. There is only one determining criterium for selection of a film – and that is good cinematography. The films and videos are selected by an advisory committee with representatives from all Visegrad countries. A special selection of 25 documentary films from the Visegrad Library will be screened at One World 2003. The Visegrad Library project will be also presented at Mediawave Györ, the Cracow Film Festival, and One World Bratislava. By touring a package of outstanding documentary films from Visegrad countries with excellent artistic value and powerful coverage of current affairs in all four Visegrad countries, we hope to attract a professional audience as well as the general public. We will also prepare a printed catalogue in English to accompany the touring package. The catalogue will provide information about each film and filmmaker profiles. The catalogue will be widely distributed to major festivals, film markets, and to Visegrad cultural centers abroad.
