It is truly a pleasure for me as Minister of Culture to support the international documentary film festival One World, and I am pleased that the festival received financial support from the Ministry of Culture. Every year, a number of interesting projects are submitted to the grant committee. But One World incorporates within it more values than just a simple screening of films. Here in the Czech Republic we do not face any imminent threat of dictatorship, human rights violations, war, torture, exploitation, or imprisonment. Nevertheless, racism, xenophobia, corruption, domestic violence, and trafficking in women – all these hit closer to home. If we ignore burdensome issues and do not speak out about them, they will not cease to exist. A documentary film has different capabilities than mass media. Its testimony touches people deeper, and in a different way. One World is not a festival of film stars, but rather of human "stars" – people who have experienced, achieved, or witnessed something and reported on it. Therefore, I am grateful for the emergence and existence of the One World film festival. I admire the zeal of all who are involved in organizing it, those who select the films, prepare the informational materials, promotions and advertising, and to those who ensure the smooth course of the screenings and the supplementary programs – all this with minimum expenditure. I am also happy that the majority of One World festival visitors are young people. Soon this will be their "one world," and maybe they will succeed in handling it better than previous generations did. Pavel Dostál |
